Recently, several cases of theft from cash register have been reported at the retail outlets located in Orchard Area. The suspect is believed to be a Middle Eastern male subject in his early thirties.
In most cases, the suspect spoke to victims in a foreign language/broken English to request change of currencies. While the cashier was returning change or exchanging currencies, the suspect would distract the cashier and grab some notes from the cash register. The suspect will return the cash to the cashier upon demand. However, the cashier would discover shortage of money after checking the cash in the cash register after the suspect had left the premises.
Another shop-lifting case at Sim Lim Square that been recorded in the CCTV on the 19th Nov 2009 at the time of 5.30pm.

CRIME PREVENTION (STRATEGIES):
The Police are closely monitoring the situation. You can help to reduce such crimes by adopting the following crime prevention measures:
- Install a CCTV camera at the cash register area to deter the culprits. Position your cash registers in such a manner that they are out of reach of any unauthorized persons;
- Advise staff to be extra vigilant when the cash register is open. Remind staff to be alert to suspicious persons loitering near to the cash register area; and
- Note the description of the culprit if one has already fallen prey. Specifically note the following:
- (1) Gender & Age;
- (2) Height & Race;
- (3) Description and colours of clothing worn;
- (4) Distinctive features such as mole, scars, tattoos etc;
- (5) Accent, if any; and
- (6) Direction and mode of escape.
